The Diocesan Board of Education and the Church Schools in the Diocese of Peterborough are grateful to the Department for Children, Families and School for pointing out any current non-compliance of current school admissions policies with the current school admissions code. As it happens, these issues have already been identified by the Board of Education and following consultation with the schools concerned, updated admissions policies for 2009 have already been presented to the local authority for consultation following the procedures laid down by the Admissions Forum.
School admissions policies are a matter for consideration by individual church school governing bodies. The Board has been working closely with all schools to ensure full compliance.
However, current admission policies were part of the consultations undertaken over 12 months ago. At that time of consultation for admissions in 2008, the current admissions code had yet to be published. In fact the Code was finally published at the end of February 2007 and the consultation was required to be completed by 1st March 2007 so that it could be presented to the Admissions Forum.
Within the consultation time available to the Board, with the agreement of the local authority, school governing bodies were helped to undertake a review of their policies. A number of changes were made at this time. However, it was agreed with the local authority that, due to tight time schedules for statutory consultation, a further review would be undertaken during the year to ensure that all policies are brought in line with the new code for school admissions in 2009.
I am pleased to report that this further review has now been undertaken and all updated policies have undergone statutory consultation and been approved by the Admissions Forum, subject to a few small amendments.
The Board of Education continues to work closely with Northamptonshire County Council to ensure that full compliance is achieved. However, where matters are controlled by school governing bodies it is essential that adequate time is provided for consultation and review prior to the implementation of changes to statutory regulations.
